After a decade of inspiration, the New Material Award is coming to a close. On 7 December 2021, Het Nieuwe Instituut will host an online concluding event, looking back at ten years of the award and sharing ideas for the future. The event sees the launch of a publication featuring all the New Material Award projects, as well as the final episode of the New Material podcast.

Dutch Design Week, in cooperation with the New Material Award, presents the Sustainable Products Talk(show) on 25 October 2020. The focus of this year’s Talk(show) is glass. It’s widely advertised as a better choice than plastic, but how sustainable is glass really?

Palazzo Clerici

In Atelier Clerici vindt van 4 tot en met 9 april de feestelijke presentatie van de New Material Award plaats. Het Nieuwe Instituut viert de ontwerpen van 18 makers tijdens de internationale designweek in Milaan.

Artist Diana Scherer is selected by the jury of the 2016 New Material Award as the New Material Fellow. For the next months Het Nieuwe Instituut will support Scherer as she develops her research project further. Scherer was awarded the fellowship for her Interwoven project, in which she manipulates plant root systems to create a textile-like material.

The current cross-pollination between nature, science and creativity is producing radical changes in material reality. An evening for sharing and discussing new developments. Speakers included Olivier van Herpt, winner of the New Material Award, Diana Scherer, the New Material Fellow for 2016 and designer Bart Hess. The discussion was moderated by Andrea van Pol.

Eighteen designers have been nominated for the New Material Award 2016 and will be presented during Dutch Design Week at the Kazerne in Eindhoven.This bi-annual award challenges artists and designers to apply and develop sustainable materials and innovative technologies. During the opening minister Bussemaker announces on 22 October the two winners. The prize awards two accolades: the New Material Award of € 15.000 for a final design and the New Material Fellow for a fleshed-out design idea linked to a research question.
